Shopping for fishing lures can overwhelm anglers, especially ones newer to the hobby. The sheer number of soft and hard baits on the shelves will likely leave you wondering where to start and which will be most effective for a given situation. We will attempt to clear up some of that confusion today with some debate on which one is most effective. However, we will also emphasize why learning to fish both types of lures correctly is essential.image

What Is Soft Bait Used For?

Their realistic texture and versatility are designed to imitate fish or other natural aquatic food sources and come in various types and colors. They are also a great inexpensive option for anglers.

Are Soft Plastics Bait or Lures?

Soft plastic bait is a range of plastic-based soft-body fishing lures. Soft baits are rubber, silicone, or other soft plastics molded into swimbaits, grubs, worms, tubes, and baitfish patterns.

How Do You Fish With a Soft Lure?

Soft plastic baits can be used in many configurations, rigs, and various techniques. The jighead is most commonly seen in soft baits lures that use a weighted hook that is threaded through the lure; only the gape of the fishing hook and the eye are exposed. Depending on the shape of the soft plastic bait, most are often cast and retrieved with short, jerky motions by flicking the fishing rod tip.

You'll want to emulate the animal's natural movement, such as prawns, baitfish, or crawdads.

There are many different types of rigs and techniques for soft bait lures. Many of these techniques and rigging methods target specific fish species and various bodies of water. Soft bait lures are also trolled and jigged in the same method as metal or hard bait lures.

What Hooks to Use for Soft Baits?

  • Octopus & Wacky - When drop-shotting by nose-hooking soft plastic baits, you'll want to use either an octopus fishing hook or a wacky fishing hook.
  • Straight Shank
  • Round Bend Offset
  • Extra Wide Gap (EWG)
