Tactical goggles are a form of ballistic eyewear that protects against various fragments and small flying projectiles that could injure the eye. What Are Military Goggles Called?
Although they go by many names among the troops, the official designation is MCEP (Military Combat Eye Protection. They have to be on the APEL (Authorized Protection Eyewear List), and the U.S. military standard is a rating of MIL-PRF-31013. The civilian rating would be an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) of ANSI Z87.1.
Is Ballistic Eyewear Bulletproof?
Although nothing is completely bulletproof, there are standards of what tactical goggles must be able to withstand. It has to be able to withstand a .22-caliber bullet traveling at 550 fps (feet per second). Bear in mind that the muzzle velocity of a rimfire .22 Long Rifle is usually around 1,100 fps, so the bullet would need to have traveled quite a ways before impact.
What Eye Protection Does the Military Use?
According to the U.S. Army website, the military uses Military Combat Eye Protection (MCEP) that has been approved by the Program Executive Office (PEO). They can come in many different brands and styles, as long as they meet the APEL (Authorized Protection Eyewear List) and are marked as such.
